Non-Profits for School Change!

“Public education is the key civil rights issue of the 21st century. Our nation's knowledge-based economy demands that we provide young people from all backgrounds and circumstances with the education and skills necessary to become knowledge workers. If we don't, we run the risk of creating an even larger gap between the middle class and the poor. This gap threatens our democracy, our society and the economic future of America.” -- Eli Broad

New Haven’s strengths and needs are inextricably linked with its non-profits, who play a critical role in filling the gaps in our community.   In supporting students and families, non-profits help build capacity and hope, both of which are essential elements to this initiative.  Time and research have shown that access to higher education is the single most critical factor to developing inter-generational wealth and personal development within historically marginalized populations.  As such, preparing and enabling more low- and moderate-income children to attend college will go a long way to increasing opportunities for success for disadvantaged youth.

In June 2009, area non-profits, brought together by the New Haven Public School Foundation and the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven, met with Mayor DeStefano and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mayo to discuss plans for the school reform initiative.  This forum and others have provided community feedback for their vision of change.  With such transparency and call for involvement, we believe there are significant roles for New Haven’s vast not-for-profit community to play in helping to shape and implement the plans for school reform and student achievement.
